Addressing historical legacies. Shifting food cultures towards justice.

Seeding Reparations seeks to intervene in dominant narratives within the food and farming sector to ensure that they connect contemporary exploitation with historical harms.

Reparations are not only about addressing past wrongs—they are essential to shaping a fair and inclusive future.

Without a unified understanding of reparations, our future actions will fail to prioritise necessary reparative frameworks for people and planet.

Seeding Reparations and the Institute for Agroecology (IfA) at the University of Vermont, in partnership with Stats4SD, invite expressions of interest to participate in our 6-week online Seeding Reparations course. The course is offered without charge to landworkers, food producers’ organisations, popular movements NGOs and individual researchers and students around the world.

Among the influences on how Seeding Reparations have come to understand reparations is the Declaration of the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, which was held in Durban, South Africa in 2001. In it, the concept of satisfaction is used to address harms that cannot be repaired. This could take the form of a formal recognition, an apology, and the implementation of methods which guarantee that such harm will not take place again. In this way a reparations approach can play a central role in bringing about a more connected and just ecosystem for all living beings.
